Hyperhidrosis can be socially and professionally devastating. It usually effects a single part of the body such as the palms of the hands, armpits, soles of the feet, the lumbar region, groin area or the nape of neck. Botox can help people who suffer from excessive sweating.

Excessive sweating in certain parts of body (focal hyperhydrosis) usually doesn’t have a knwonw cause. There are several contributing factors such as a poor diet, anxiety problems, depression, etc.

The procedure to reduce excessive sweating.

To reduce excessive sweating, type A botulotoxin is injected into the affected area with a very thin needle. A very diluted solution is used for the treatment and only a small amount of the solution is used; approximately one injection per one square cm. of affected area.

Using local injections of botulinum toxin to alleviate the symptoms of hyperhidrosis is a promising new approach. Research has shown that treating the armpits, hands, feet, and face with botulinum toxin is safe and effective.

Botox works to stop hyperhidrosis because it prevents nerve fiber impulses from effecting the sweat glands.

The treatment is not severe and does not require anesthesia. Past patients have reported it is less painful than having blood drawn. Anesthetic – for example cream Emla ointment can be used in case the client is extremely sensitive to pain.

The effect of botulotoxin starts to appear gradually anytime from two to 10 days following the treatment. Using botox almost stops the function of sweat glands. The result is always individual, but it typically lasts 7-12 months or longer. Since the results are temporary, often a repeat treatment will be needed.
